Since my recovery and Adrian's birth kept us local this year, we spent Thanksgiving with our friends. Our next door neighbors invited us to their house for the full spread. Danelle and her husband are very good cooks, so the food was divine. His mother and aunt were there as well and contributed to the delicious meal. His mother turned out to be a children's book illustrator and so we got to talking all about illustration. They have two adorable red-headed kids around Anson's age, so he was thrilled to play with them. We had a wonderful time and I have to say that it was a great opportunity to make friends with our neighbors.
The next morning we drove to Ann Arbor to spend the weekend with my sister. When we got there we visited, then went out on the town to get some dinner. My dear friend Emily Elliott goes to law school at University of Michigan and came to dinner with us. It is always so good to see her. She and I met the first time I went to Boston, in 2005. Since then she has been a bridesmaid at my wedding, came to visit me in England, and is now living close enough to visit once in a while! Lauren took us all to an authentic Chinese restaurant. The food was divine. Then we went home and put ourselves all in bed.
The next day our husbands got up and went straight to the stadium at U of M to watch the football game between Paul's school (OSU) and Aaron's school (Michigan). Funny enough, the two schools have one of the fiercest rivalries in the country. While the men were at the game, Lauren and I took the kids and went to a great diner for lunch. Then we went to Trader Joe's and got groceries. After the game Emily came over to say goodbye and the men came home to babysit the boys. Lauren, her daughter Charlotte, and I all went to downtown Detroit to watch the Nutcracker. Lauren and I have performed in that ballet numerous times, so attending officially kick-started the Christmas season. It was the first time Charlotte attended a ballet, so she made it very enjoyable to be there. The production was cute, the hall was beautiful, there was a choir caroling in the lobby before the ballet, and the smell of candied almonds made the whole experience irresistible. It was really nice to have a girls' night out, especially in the pretty part of downtown Detroit.
Sunday we went to church together, ate lunch, then made the long drive home. We put the boys in bed and watched the second part of Gandhi (the film). We had watched the first half of the movie before the summer, but we had to return it before we could finish it. It was great to finally watch the rest of such a fantastic film. Plus, it was nice just to spend some time together as a couple.
That's pretty much what we did over the holiday. Now Paul is back at the books for one or two more weeks before finals!
